Somatic movement is generally gentle and can be adapted for many conditions, but certain health issues require caution or complete exclusion from specific techniques. It is essential to consult a physician before starting somatic movement, especially if you have a serious medical or psychiatric condition.
Medical conditions include but are not limited to:
Absolute Contraindications (Complete Exclusion):
-
Acute Systemic Illness or Fever: Any severe, active infectious condition (cold, flu, etc.)
-
Cardiovascular Problems: Unstable angina, recent heart attack, uncontrolled high blood pressure (hypertension), or dissecting aneurysm
-
Recent Surgery or Acute Injuries: Areas with unhealed burns, open wounds, or recent fractures/surgeries
-
Active Psychotic Conditions: Major psychiatric conditions, such as active psychosis, schizophrenia, or paranoid conditions, may be aggravated by the intense internal focus of some somatic therapies and should be managed by a mental health professional first
-
Pregnancy (for certain intense techniques): Certain intense methods, such as somatic breathwork, are not appropriate for pregnant women
-
Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) or Embolism: Any circulatory issues involving blood clots
-
Neurological Conditions (Specific): A history of seizures or epilepsy may exclude a person from intense breathwork practices and particular eye movements
Conditions Requiring Caution and Medical Supervision:
Many other conditions require a physician's written permission or require significant modifications to the somatic practice:
-
Neurological/Neurodegenerative Conditions: Conditions like multiple sclerosis (MS), Parkinson's disease, or a past stroke require careful consideration and guidance to adapt movements to the individual's ability and safety
-
Severe Osteoporosis: Only very light, gentle movements may be possible to prevent injury
-
Diabetes: Especially if uncontrolled, monitoring is crucial and adaptations may be needed due to potential nerve damage (neuropathy) or bruising
-
Cancer: Treatment for cancer may require a modified approach and physician's permission, though gentle movement can be beneficial for stress relief and support
-
History of Trauma: Individuals with a history of physical or sexual abuse may find some body-focused work or the use of touch very triggering and must work with a highly trained, sensitive practitioner who can ensure a safe environment
-
Somatic Symptom Disorder: While somatic movement can help, individuals with this disorder may benefit more from integrated care involving mental health professionals to address underlying anxiety or depression
Amanda Young and Inner Sense Somatics cannot diagnose any medical conditions or provide referral for medical treatment or tests and reserves the right to refuse to conduct a somatic movement lesson based on any conditions she feels are contraindicated.
